MAXCAP / CHANGELOG

Changelog

Released versions can be downloaded from the home page. This page covers the highlights; the complete technical record for developers is in the repository's CHANGELOG.md.

0.4.15 · 2026-10-19

  • The first capture shortcut after a while idle no longer hesitates: the selection overlay no longer builds a toolbar it never uses, and while idle MaxCap rehearses the overlay off screen every 3 minutes (nothing is shown or captured), so it stays ready.

0.4.14 · 2026-10-19

  • Choosing an area no longer makes the other display flash: its mask fades out smoothly within 0.2 s as you release the mouse, instead of vanishing the moment the toolbar appears.
  • "Preparing capture…" only shows when preparing is slow, and the key hints leave as you release the mouse.

0.4.13 · 2026-10-18

  • The recording countdown and recording control are now dark rounded panels without white corners. The control uses icon buttons — Pause/Resume, a red Stop and Cancel — and shows the time and the sound and microphone status.
  • A finished recording confirms itself like a screenshot with "Recording saved", its length and where it was saved.
  • The video preview no longer shows black areas; one row below it shows length, resolution, frame rate and file size, with Export as GIF on the right.

0.4.12 · 2026-10-18

  • Captures on the Shelf show their time left (for example "10 hours left"), turning orange in the last hour.
  • When captures will expire within the hour, the Shelf appears by itself with "N captures expire within the hour"; click Keep all to keep them. Captures no longer disappear without warning.

0.4.11 · 2026-10-16

  • A capture toolbar in the style of Xnip: a new column of buttons beside the selection's top-right corner — Pin to screen (F), Copy only, Open in window, Open in Preview, Save to Downloads, Scrolling capture and Recognize text — so the bottom toolbar keeps only the editing tools.
  • New Highlight tool (S): the areas you draw stay bright and everything else dims.
  • While you annotate a capture, the other displays are no longer covered and can be used as usual.
  • Copy only copies the edited image and closes the capture right away; the main button now reads "Done".
  • Choosing an area shows the arrow pointer, and while annotating the pointer changes to the move cursor over a mark; window captures have a tighter shadow with less empty margin.
  • Open in window opens an ordinary window sized to the image, with a simpler interface; the Settings layout is more compact.

0.4.10 · 2026-10-16

  • The first capture after a long idle period no longer lags: macOS tears down its screen capture service when idle and rebuilding it takes about 0.35 s, so MaxCap now keeps it ready. Measured: from 0.72 s down to about 0.2 s.
  • A clearer selection magnifier: a thick blue border with a shadow, a pixel grid, the pointer's row and column highlighted, and the colour value of the current pixel.
  • Words in Recognize text (Big Bang) no longer overlap, and each line uses one font size; picking by dragging is smoother and a fast drag no longer misses words. Press E in the capture toolbar or the editor to open it.

0.4.9 · 2026-10-15

  • The first capture shortcut press after a while idle should be as quick as the next ones: macOS App Nap no longer slows MaxCap down, capture work runs at the priority of a key press, and the screen capture service is warmed up at launch and after the Mac wakes (no pixels are read then).
  • Copying a capture is faster and uses less memory: the clipboard gets the PNG, and the large TIFF is only made when another app asks for it.
  • Thumbnails are made faster; with diagnostics on, MaxCap writes to disk at most once a minute instead of every 5 seconds.

0.4.8 · 2026-10-15

  • New installs get default shortcuts that no longer take over common combinations: region to clipboard is ⌘⇧1 (was ⌘⇧C), scrolling capture ⌘⇧8 (was ⌘⇧S, Save As), and window and screen captures start from the menu bar by default (were ⌘⇧W and ⌘⇧D). Your existing shortcut settings are not changed.
  • New installs follow the system language; built-in rule names show in the UI language.
  • When started at login, MaxCap stays in the menu bar instead of opening its main window.
  • Error messages are readable and translated, and shortcut conflicts explain the reason.
  • "Reset to defaults" and the shortcut "Defaults" ask first, and a reset keeps your interface language; ⌘, opens Settings.

0.4.7 · 2026-10-15

  • A recording is no longer deleted when saving it fails: it is recovered from the file already recorded, and one that still can't be saved is retried on the next launch.
  • When a recording or a shortcut screenshot fails, MaxCap says why (no Screen Recording permission, not enough disk space, a recording already running…) instead of nothing happening; a recording won't start with less than 1 GB of free disk space.
  • Fixed an occasional crash when stopping a recording, and a control panel that couldn't be closed after cancelling while a recording was starting.
  • Quitting from the menu bar saves an active recording first; updates are not installed during a recording.
  • "Delete duplicates" in History deletes only identical copies that aren't annotated, noted or kept permanently; captures that merely look alike are no longer deleted.
  • Deleting a capture in History or Search can be undone for 5 seconds; the button on Shelf cards now reads "Remove from shelf".
  • If MaxCap can't start, it says why and can open the data folder; right after an update it can also restore the previous version in one click.
  • Captures open in a pinned window or the floating editor no longer expire underneath it.
  • One unreadable setting no longer resets every setting; your capture rules, shortcuts and excluded apps are kept.

0.4.6 · 2026-10-15

  • Recognize text (Big Bang): click Recognize text in the capture toolbar or the editor and the image dims, with every recognised word and punctuation mark laid over its original place. Click or drag to pick words, then click the Copy button that appears beside them (or ⌘C; ⌘A picks everything); the panel on the right has the full text, Copy all and QR codes.
  • Copying from the capture toolbar ends the capture, so you can ⌘V right away in the app you were using; pressing Esc once closes only the recognition view and you can keep annotating. Capture Text (⌘⇧2) still copies straight to the clipboard.

0.4.5 · 2026-10-14

  • Return and Esc now work when a screenshot, Capture Text or recording is started from the menu bar: Return finishes the capture or starts recording, Esc cancels, and typing works in the capture toolbar. Esc cancels the recording countdown.

0.4.4 · 2026-10-14

  • Exports go to Downloads: GIFs, file exports and bug reports are saved to your Downloads folder by default and existing files are never overwritten; you can still choose an export folder in Settings › Share.
  • The recording shortcut is now ⌘⇧7: the old ⌘⇧6 is macOS's "Save picture of the Touch Bar" shortcut, on by default, so MaxCap never received it. Settings still on ⌘⇧6 move to ⌘⇧7 automatically.
  • Fixed the menu bar showing "● 0:27" after a recording ended.
  • The recording preview no longer shows "Finding similar captures…" forever, and selecting a recording area now says "Return to record".

0.4.3 · 2026-10-14

  • Text in long scrolling captures is fully recognised: very tall images are read in sections. Before, captures taller than about 16,000 px had no text recognised at all, so they could be neither searched nor copied from. Existing long captures can be re-run with "Recognize again" in the preview.
  • Very thin images no longer count as failed recognition; if accurate recognition fails, fast recognition is tried once.

0.4.2 · 2026-10-14

  • Fixed "Install and restart" failing with "Finish the current capture or file operation": after an upgrade, while text recognition and similarity fingerprints run in the background, the installer now pauses that work and waits briefly. If you still see it when updating from 0.4.0 / 0.4.1, try again in a few minutes, or download the new installer from the home page and replace the app.

0.4.1 · 2026-10-14

  • Capture Text: press ⌘⇧2 (or use the Text button in the menu bar or the workspace) and select an area; its text goes straight to the clipboard, recognised on device, and no screenshot is saved. QR codes in the area are copied too.
  • Text in the preview: press T in a capture's preview to read and copy its recognised text, or select text directly on the image; parts you cropped or blurred stay hidden.
  • QR codes: QR codes are detected along with the text; copy the content or open https links directly.
  • Diagnostics reports show how long each step from the shortcut to the selection takes, and the type of error behind a failed text recognition, to help track down problems.

0.4.0 · 2026-10-14

Theme: find it again. Apple Silicon Macs only.

  • Rewind: keeps the last few seconds of the screen under the cursor in memory (never on disk). Press ⌘⇧R to open the timeline, step frame by frame to the moment you just missed, and capture it whole or select a region. (Pro)
  • Screen recording: ⌘⇧6 records a region, a window or the full screen to MP4, optionally with system audio and the microphone (off by default); recordings land on the Shelf like screenshots. Exporting as GIF and adding to bug reports are Pro.
  • Bug reports: turn a session into Markdown with steps, screenshots, recordings and environment details, then copy it or export it as a folder / ZIP. (Pro)
  • Send to Eagle: the Share menu sends captures to Eagle on your Mac with title, page address, tags and recognised text. (Pro)
  • Expanded search: a built-in Chinese–English glossary, so searching "付款失败" also finds "Payment declined". Related results are marked separately, and you can switch to exact matches only. No model, no network. (Pro)
  • Fix: pressing a shortcut while a capture was being saved could occasionally freeze with the spinning cursor.
  • Global search panel: press ⌥⇧Space in any app and type text from a capture, an app name or a title to find it; ⏎ copies, drag it out, ⌘⏎ edits, ⌘P pins.
  • Search filters: app: site: in: is: date: after: before:, with Chinese aliases (such as 应用:微信); active filters show as removable chips. (Pro)
  • Browser sites: captures in Safari, Chrome, Edge, Brave and Arc remember the site and page path, so site: finds them; the part of the address after ? and # is never stored, and you can turn this off and clear it in Settings.
  • Similar captures: image fingerprints are computed on your Mac; the preview shows similar captures with duplicates marked, and History folds duplicates together so older copies can be deleted in one click. (Pro)
  • History: filter by app and date, grouped by day, loading 100 captures at a time as you scroll.
  • Notes and renaming: add a note or change the title of any capture; both are searchable right away.
  • Stronger privacy: excluded apps such as password managers are left out of region and full-screen captures even when only visible in the background; incognito / InPrivate windows refuse captures.
  • MaxCap Pro: offline licence keys, a 14-day trial, Settings › Licence. No account, no online activation.
  • Large libraries: with 10,000 captures, saving one takes only 4–5 ms, and searching no longer slows captures down.

0.3.39 · 2026-10-12

  • The selection and magnifier redraw more reliably while choosing an area, without dark trails while dragging.
  • Shelf auto-hide works in both the expanded and collapsed layouts.
  • Empty sessions are cleaned up after their captures expire or are deleted.

0.3.33 – 0.3.37 · 2026-10-11

  • A redesigned Shelf: photo-style layout, actions on hover, strip and grid layouts, and a draggable title bar.
  • Dragging out several captures in a row no longer needs an extra click.
  • Capturing starts faster on external displays, and the annotation tools work before the image has finished decoding.

Earlier 0.3 releases · 2026-10

  • Vertical scrolling capture: manual scrolling by default, stitched correctly at any speed; automatic scrolling is optional.
  • Signed in-app updates: off by default; once on, checked once a day.
  • Sessions, the Shelf, pinned floating windows, stitching and PDF export.
